WILLIAM WATSON WEST
Best Picture in Show
Predominantly working in watercolour, William’s mixed-media paintings reflect the beautiful surroundings that he has grown up in on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Based upon first-hand observations of landscape, flora and fauna, his work varies from the more abstract to the semi-representational, through which, he seeks to translate the emotions that the landscape evokes onto paper.
MATTHEW DUCKETT
Best Newcomer
The paintings are essentially landscapes, but rather than recording a topography they attempt to tease out what is remembered, and thus may contain time and movement, becoming spatially ambiguous, so the viewer should not set too much store by titles. They rely on associations of colour, form, and texture, and analogies with natural phenomena, such as flow and gravity.
JEREMY TAYLOR
